Contrast (k\u00c9\u2122n-tr\u00c4\u0081st’, k\u00c5\u008fn’tr\u00c4\u0081st’)\u00a0 To set in opposition in order to show or emphasize differences<\/p>\n

Visually, New Mexico\u00a0geography\u00a0defines\u00a0contrast.\u00a0 From the rich color stratifications to the jutting rock formations,\u00a0 you experience it but it is hard to feel a part of it.\u00a0 Meteorologically, you have to disavow yourself of everything you think a desert should be.\u00a0 This is high desert.\u00a0 And it is cold.<\/p>\n

The multiple layers that I packed simply did not cut it today.\u00a0 There is cold, and then there is 60 mile an hour cold.\u00a0 I am learning.<\/p>\n

During my many attempts to warm up today, I was able to speak with a variety of people.\u00a0 I would like you to meet Barbara Gordon from Gallup, New Mexico.<\/p>\n

Barbara Gordon is a study in contrasts.\u00a0 She comes from a\u00a0long tradition of military service.\u00a0 Her father was a fifth generation career military man and her maternal grandfather was a General in a family of Generals.\u00a0 She traveled the world and decided to settle in Gallup because\u00a0it had ‘the best stars’ and a ‘360 degree sunset’.\u00a0 Here, she worked for 28 years as a teacher and principal at the Zuni Pueblo Reservation.\u00a0 She raised two children and now works with the Navaho tribe.\u00a0 She speaks with equal eloquence of her support for Obama and the need to be more effective with our Federal funding programs.\u00a0\u00a0Barbara\u00a0has always wanted to see a woman in the White House.\u00a0 Just not Sarah Palin.<\/p>\n

Finally, I would like to introduce Mary and David Workman from Yorba Linda, California and Donna and Ron Workman of Williams, Arizona.\u00a0<\/p>\n

We met at Old Smokey’s Pancake House and Restaurant.\u00a0 David and Ron are brothers and share political leanings.\u00a0 They were warm, kind and open.\u00a0 And while they\u00a0describe themselves as staunchly conservative, as you will hear, it isn’t that simple.\u00a0 Listen for the contrasts.<\/p>\n
