{"id":244,"date":"2008-10-12T21:43:29","date_gmt":"2008-10-13T04:43:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hwireroad.org\/2008\/?p=244"},"modified":"2008-10-14T10:48:12","modified_gmt":"2008-10-14T17:48:12","slug":"desert-contrasts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hwireroad.org\/2008\/?p=244","title":{"rendered":"Desert Contrasts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contrast (k\u00c9\u2122n-tr\u00c4\u0081st&#8217;, k\u00c5\u008fn&#8217;tr\u00c4\u0081st&#8217;)\u00a0 To set in opposition in order to show or emphasize differences<\/p>\n<p>Visually, New Mexico\u00a0geography\u00a0defines\u00a0contrast.\u00a0 From the rich color stratifications to the jutting rock formations,\u00a0 you experience it but it is hard to feel a part of it.\u00a0 Meteorologically, you have to disavow yourself of everything you think a desert should be.\u00a0 This is high desert.\u00a0 And it is cold.<\/p>\n<p>The multiple layers that I packed simply did not cut it today.\u00a0 There is cold, and then there is 60 mile an hour cold.\u00a0 I am learning.<\/p>\n<p>During my many attempts to warm up today, I was able to speak with a variety of people.\u00a0 I would like you to meet Barbara Gordon from Gallup, New Mexico.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwireroad.org\/2008\/wp-content\/uploads\/002.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-246\" title=\"002\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hwireroad.org\/2008\/wp-content\/uploads\/002-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Barbara Gordon is a study in contrasts.\u00a0 She comes from a\u00a0long tradition of military service.\u00a0 Her father was a fifth generation career military man and her maternal grandfather was a General in a family of Generals.\u00a0 She traveled the world and decided to settle in Gallup because\u00a0it had &#8216;the best stars&#8217;
