into Tennessee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Arriving in Tennessee almost at the moment that the autumn color\u00a0was about to emerge\u00a0represents probably the greatest unintended and certainly\u00a0the\u00a0most welcomed\u00a0consequence of this trip.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This seasonal saturation of color is something that many Californians quietly envy.\u00a0 There is good reason.\u00a0 It warms you to your core.\u00a0 And it doesn&#8217;t stop at the colors.\u00a0 After enduring 5 states\u00a0of iceberg lettuce*, I find myself awash in a sea of rich vegetables prepared in the most decadent and heart stopping ways.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwireroad.org\/2008\/wp-content\/uploads\/0033.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-436\" title=\"0033\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hwireroad.org\/2008\/wp-content\/uploads\/0033-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0Lettuce\u00a0clarification &#8211; After consuming more iceberg lettuce (or, as I like to call it, crunchy water) in the past month than I have eaten in my entire\u00a0adult life, I ordered a Caesar salad at the first restaurant that offered one.\u00a0\u00a0My\u00a0hopes crushed\u00a0when the waitress placed a bowl of iceberg lettuce with Caesar dressing and a packet of Parmesan cheese on the side in front of me.\u00a0 I miss home.<\/p>\n<p>My time in West Memphis was amazing.\u00a0 On my first day, Debra Rieves had introduced me to Dixie and Ralph Carlson.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hwireroad.org\/2008\/wp-content\/uploads\/0042.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-437\" title=\"0042\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hwireroad.org\/2008\/wp-content\/uploads\/0042-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Theirs is a remarkable story.\u00a0 Married for 60 years this coming April, they are first generation farmers who purchased\u00a0320 acres at the age of 19 producing cotton, soybeans and oats.\u00a0\u00a0Along with Ralph&#8217;s brothers, they built that farm into more than a 25,000 acre enterprise in three states.\u00a0 In 1966, they succesfully obtained a charter to start the first community bank in Crittenden county.\u00a0 Along the way, they raised 4 children, Ralph won 3 gold medals for tennis in the Senior Olympics and Dixie became a master gardener.\u00a0 More, Dixie is an elected State delegate for the Republican Party and attended this year&#8217;s convention.\u00a0 She also serves as a State Commissioner on the Keep Arkansas Beautiful Commission and on the County Election Commission.<\/p>\n<p>Dixie and Ralph graciously opened their home and their hearts in the greatest southern tradition.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\"
